Nowhere else on earth do you have a coverage of so many languages, compressed into such a small geographic area. For decades, they've translated every film shown in their theaters or TV into 2 or 3 languages for subs, of which one is often English. They have a well-respected subtitling company with a similar name (but this is probably not the same one ?). If only we could get access to what they must have ! I've seen several foreign films where they translated some incidental dialog from Urdu, Bushman, Innuit -- or other obscure stuff no one else could do or would be likely to bother with.

Anyway, please post your site additions here. I'd like to add several, but need to weed out a bunch from my list that have gone 404, or have scams, for pay, or malware BS going on.

In the meantime, and while I'm at it, here's a title that has stumped me for months, with no English subs anywhere to be found. In most cases, I eventually manage to find something, but this was a strikeout.

Just as an experiment, I tried running the Italian text through translation software, and that didn't work: the result was much worse than the usual joke you get with Babelfish. It may be much too reliant on contemporary slang.

I'd be curious to know what is tripping the alarm for you ? The current Avast that I'm running even flags dangerous sites from pages of Google hits, before you go to them. Haven't seen anything flagged there, nor when I go to the site itself. No single AV product is going to be comprehensive or infallible, but I find that kind of odd. Is there something more wide-ranging like Virustotal -- with multiple AV resources -- that you can point at a website rather than just at a file ?

I do run the NoScript FF extension however, which requires individual permissions for whatever page elements you run into at a site -- if it's set up that way. Sometimes a bit of a pain, but also an extra layer of insulation.

I'm from Australia, so I trust the syntax I employ and any idioms herein will be decipherable. Struth! Crickey, mate...no worries: she'll be right. Fair dinkum.

My suggestion is to look for another source of the film if the subtitles are impossible to find. If the movie is not available at, say, Amazon with English subs then what you seek is not available. In the latter case, you might try using a free online translator as best as you can then make a trade of favor with someone whose native tongue is Japanese, such as at an oriental forum, again using a web page translator to communicate. If the project is important enough, you might even try Facebook. The easiest method is the most expensive: pay for the translation.

Hmmm, I thought he might have been replying to me, and the post immediately prior.

Just by coincidence, I recently went to the temporary digs of my dentist, and noticed that there was a translations firm several doors down. I can only guess what they would charge to render a movie like this, but there's no way I'm paying -- say -- two or three hundred bucks to watch an obscure Italian movie. (And that does not even address the extra work of my creating timecode and syncing it up.)

I was kind of wondering about what gets English subs and what doesn't, even among more recent works. My assumption would be that if something is intended strictly for the domestic market, whether in film or tv, and there's no plan for any export release or foreign sales, then it won't. That is probably the case with the example I cited. There are plenty more: I just came across a Dutch thriller from 2011 that has no subs, and another from Sweden or Denmark, so I'll either wait until some subs turn up at one of these sites, or just not bother trying to watch them.

Meanwhile, I don't think we have a comprehensive listing of these subtitle sites, so I encourage people to update this thread.

I perceive you to be a very bright fellow, so I'll challenge you to a quiz: Even though I'm a polyglot, grammarian and philologist as well as a translator of the Greek Bible, how then is it true that I did not mispell endeavour when I typed endeavor?

Yes, except I apparently glossed over his reference to Japanese. But for that, it seemed to have some overlap with the latter portion of my post #10, including my mention of having tried translation software and free online translation.

Don't take it to heart.

We all get infected with Americanisms.

The "should" was a reference to the ship of that name, thus the link, which is something I (obviously Australian as well) still recall studying in primary school. I won't call you out for the new mistake you made, I hope that absolves me of being OCPD.

The main point though is that you were responding to a three-year old post. It might be useful if you have a new generic solution that others might be interested in, but that wasn't the case here.

The answer to how it's possible to misspell and yet correctly spell endeavor (sic) is that I'm in Florida. So I spelled the word correctly here but not in Australia.

As for the OCPD trait, I just exhibited it by not letting go of the issue. Another method of identifying OCPD is to check your wallet: are the big bills at the back and small ones up front, all upright and facing the same way? Do you burn again a project on DVD media if you made a small error in labeling? Are you uncomfortable if the AR "should" be 1.37:1, but you encoded it at 1.33:1?

I do that -- again -- every couple months, for several titles. Usually the results remain negative, and I would not expect that to change until and unless there may be either a foreign tv sale or foreign dvd release for said titles. (In this case, 'foreign' referring to some English-speaking territory.)

Once in awhile, you will be surprised to find (instead) a Sub/IDX or SRT that some hobbyist, film buff, or simply generous person created and posted. But such people would have to possess the respective language skills, ability to make timed subs, plus the time and interest to do this. And that is a rather occasional, hit or miss situation.

I don't see any popups or deceptive links there.

Just read what the links are and you'll get the subs without any hassles.
Its been around for several years, and has a forum and a reputation system -- unlike "subsmax.com" which is probably leeched from that anyway and has no indicators of quality or previews.

Thanks for adding that one, which had not previously been on my list, or my radar screen. I think it is unlikely that we have yet discovered or mentioned all of the worthwhile subs sites that may be out there.

I know what you're talking about (except for the SEO acronym), and find that very annoying also. This applies even more for those sites that open a window and want you to download a plug-in or some other unknown and dubious software, leading you to believe this is required in order to obtain the listed subs. (It isn't.) The paid for priority listings from Google are a real problem, as is its tracking behavior, so thanks to Hoser Rob

I agree. I don't use Google search much anymore (and uninstalled Chrome) for precisely that reason. They're turning into Facebook. I use StartPage or DuckDuckGo.

If you enter "subtitles download" into startpage the 1st four entries you get are from opensubtitles.org.
