Do wireless (WLAN) signals go through walls or bounce off the walls?

both. You will experience a drop off of signal strength though walls but the amount will depend on the composition of the wall structure.

Most walls pretty transparent, metal is bad. Certain stucco installations have a backing much like chicken wire that can cut reception dramatically. Glass is almost completely transparent. As I guess it's supposed to be.

It works the same way that any radio signal works, but it has a very short range to keep it contained in a small area.
