Have you tried simply using the drivers available from the motherboard manufacturer?

I would start with the drivers they supply before trying to "update" to the latest release. It's not always a good idea to upgrade unless you are trying to fix a problem.

Are you seeing a 'Realtek HD Audio Manager' in your Control Panel? And there should also be some references under 'Sound' in Control Panel. Both of those pages can affect the audio. The 'Manager' in this computer uses a digital output, that's why the speaker connections are grayed out.

Then the 'Audio' page. I have a digital input selected, but nothing plugged into it. Normally a analog input would go to 'Line in.'

If you also have the Realtek icon in your taskbar, you should have another menu:

I would also DL the drivers from the MB manufacturer and update as needed. Sometimes the generic drivers don't work as well.
