I have some AVI files that are just too big! For 25 minutes, they are 350 megs. Yet another 25min file is only 89 megs...I tried to convert to MPEG to therefore convert back to AVI, as well as trying to just convert from AVI to AVI with Vidomi and VirtualDub, but it wouldn't work. The one time that I was able to convert through Vidomi, it only did the audio. I used the conversion guides to the letter, but with no luck! Any suggestions?

use this guide...

dont miss this part (i highlighted the important stuff)...
Select DivX Low Motion and hit Configure, here can you change the bitrate. You can calculate the bitrate, for example if you want the DivX to fit on one CD=650 MB. You take the video bitrate here 910 kbps and the audio bitrate here 128 kbps = 1038 / 8 to get kiloBYTE = 130 kbyte/s. Then you will fit about 650 000 kilobyte / 130 = 5000 seconds = 1 h 23 minutes on one CD. Hit OK
Select DivX Audio and the bitrate or use MPEG Layer 3 Audiopeace out,
