We have a 12.3gb mkv file which plays fine on several software players. My question is how can I breakup this mkv file into smaller pieces(3 maybe) and put each piece onto dvd media and be able to play each piece on a stand alone dvd player?
Specs are: 1080p blueray dts x264.mkv

If you talking about a standard DVD player it's not going to happen. 1080p and x264.mkv are both deal breakers.

Convert to dvd and watch and buy a blu-ray player in the future and then author the mkv to 3 dvd as avchd with tsmuxergui.

Just to echo, conversion to DVD is your only option if you do not have a Blu-Ray player.

Should the blueray player be computer mounted or stand alone?

If you would like to play on your television, get a standalone. You can then use txmuxer and other tools (in the Tools section, to the left) to crate DVD-5 or DVD-9 blu-ray discs. Make sure that the player supports this feature (most that I've seen lately do).

Thanks for the tip. I was looking at the Sony 350 when I noticed the Sony 360 so I just ordered it.
