Wanted to convert MKV to a format thats playable on a dvd player, avi or divx, which is better at retaining as much of the quality as possible?
Would the best choice be using ConvertXtoDVD to a dvd9, if this is possible?
    Anyone?

    I wouldn't use RiverPast.

ConvertXtoDVD, FAVC or AVS2DVD will all do a good job and conversion to DVD format. Xvid4PSP can be used to convert to Xvid encoded AVI suitable for playback on standalone machines.

Which will preserve the most quality ?

Depends on the quality of the source.

Thanks! But I think that would be decompressing to re-compressing, but it would be playable.
I think Convertxtodvd with either dvd5 or dvd9 setting(one that gives Excellent conversion) , keep aspect resolution would produce best quality results...

Anything you do will involve decompressing and recompressing. Your subject is MKV to AVI or Divx. If you use ConvertXtoDVD you get neither unless you re-encode a second time, which will definately reduce quality. If you want ot get a Divx AVI file then you want to do the convert directly from the MKV file, not from MKV to DVD to AVI.
