    Hi all,

I downloaded a video that says it's in rmvb format, but it wasn't playable. I checked it with GSpot and both the audio and video codecs appear to be for a WMV movie.

Audio codec is 0x0161 (WMA v2)
    Vid codec is WMV2.

What can I do to fix this?

    Thank you

  2. Anyone can rename a file with whatever extension they want. What is the actual container? MediaInfo or GSpot should be able to tell you.

    Under container, it says:

    File Type: ASF [WMA/WMV]
    MIME Type: video/x-ms-asf

I tried to change the extension by right clicking on the file and choosing rename, but that didn't work.

How else can I change the extension?

You need to go to 'Folder Options' in 'Control Panel', and under 'View', uncheck the box for ' Hide extensions for known file types.' Then you should be able to change it.

    Thanks! That worked.

But the video still can't play. Window Media Player says something about DRM... had no idea.

    I give up. Delete.

There's a lot of 'fake' WMV files on the net. Many of them are a scam, they want you to log into their site to get the password/DRM key. (And likely a few trojans or a virus or keylogger to go along with it.) Sometimes a ad will pop up. If VLC won't play it, trash it. VLC doesn't much care what the extension is, it just reads the file and most times uses the correct codec. If you see a green blotchy background and no picture, it's probably DRM protected.
