  1. Sometimes when I try to back up dvd using DVD Shrink, I get this error message of "cyclical redundancy". Some members have told me that is when the disc is dirty, but the dvd is brand new. What else can this be due to?

Also, I sometimes use DVD FAB 5 to extract the files, then use DVD Shrink to "open file". But even after encoding to 90%, I get an error message that it cannot continue. Anyone else have these problems and are there any other free programs to use? I used to use DVD Decrypter, which I believe uses FIXVTS, to extract, but I think that program is obsolete now.

  2. FYI- I tried using DVD Decrypter and got some weird I/O error. No idea what that is.

When I use DVD Fab 5, it gives me "Error while reading! Please choose what to do?"
    Retry, Abort, Ignore, Ignore All.
    This always happens around 57.05%.

If I click "retry", I keep getting the same message over and over. I have to select "Ignore All".

Then when it is complete, I will use DVD Shrink to "open files" but get error. Is there a updated software program other than DVD Fab5?

CRC is a error checking process. It the original doesn't compare to the copy, then you may get a CRC error. This error can be caused by quite a few things, a dirty disc is one. Others are poor communication from the source drive to the burner. Or it may be a problem with the drive that's reading your disc. Or it can be caused by crappy DVD media if you were burning.

If you posted your Shrink Log file, we might have a better idea of the exact cause. It doesn't seem to relate to your burner, so it may be the reading drive, the disc you are backing up, or a problem with your hard drive communication.

It seems to think there is an error between the data on your original disc and the file that was copied to your hard drive from that disc.

Use DVD Fab decrypter latest version to extract files to disc. If that goes smoothly, there is no problem with the drive.
You may need to use either fixvts or pgc edit on the ripped files to get them to work in shrink.

  5. mgh, I am using DVD Fab Decrptyer (v 5.25) but gets weird error message that won't go away unless I "ignore all".

redwudz, I am using Verbatim DVD-R and have not had much errors burning. So I don't believe it is the disc quality. How do I post a screenshot at this forum?

Check the Shrink log. It should be in plain text. Just cut and paste it to our forum. Remove the DVD name if you like. It should be here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users <or particular user>\DVD Shrink. But it can vary by OS.

I think the problem is with the original DVD itself, or maybe a problem with your hard drive. I'm assuming it ripped correctly. Some of the newest DVDs may not have the proper decryption files from DVDFab HD Decrypter. If so, wait a week or two.

SVS Shrink will also throw Cyclic Redundancy errors with ArCoSS protected discs, however as DVDFab is also throwing read errors, I suspect you have a bad disc. It happens. Return it and get a new one.

    Backing up exactly what ???

If this is just a "copy of backup" made originally from a commercially produced dvd that was ripped it would suggest some form of copy protection was not entirely dealt with beforehand.

An error to appear exactly around a specific % could be caused due to loss of communication with the device or inferior media

1: Check for updated firmware (drives age unknown)
    2: Check data cable
3: Check running tasks and monitor

Burning and ripping are two individual process's ... lets also throw in DVD Identifier to check media
