    is it possible to copy a regular dvd onto a dvd-r. if so how. i tried 2 programs. prassi and nero with both of there dvd copy programs and i got errors. is there something else i have to do. or can you even do it?

You get the error because commercial DVD movies have something called Content Scrambling System (CSS). this is a system that was implemented to protect the data from being copied, and although it has been broken (DeCSS and implementation in DVD rippers) it does its job when it comes to direct DVD copying, it wont allow u to do it.

    heres the basic process: To burn it u must first rip it to your HDD (use a ripper like smartripper, its one of the best) while u rip it the CSS is removed. From here u an burn it to a DVD as far as i know. use one of these guides and try it out, its all fairly straight forward http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdr-guides.htm

    but there u can run into some other problems, some DVD media is dual layerd (DVD-9) while DVD-R media is DVD-4 so u may need to remove extras, extra audio, subtitles, and/or downsampling video in order to get it to fit. these guides will show u beginning and advanced methods of copying DVDs.
