For the past few weeks, when I tried to download updates from Stopzilla, it worked for a while and if it was particularly large the server would time out. If I stuck with it and kept retrying, it would eventually work.

Today I had one (an anti-phishing definition) that was bigger than ever, 4.35 mb. Same problem. Since it had also been bugging me to install the newest release, 5.0.40, I decided to try that. Well, the new release was 13.25 mb! I was sure that wouldn't download either, but it did!

Anyway, I go to install more updates on top of the new release and I get to that same 4.35 mb anti-phishing definition and it times out again. This time it also had a bunch of smallish anti-spyware definitions to unload beforehand, which it did, but when it times out with the big anti-phishing definition, it loses all those small anti-spyware updates and has to re-download those when I hit 'Retry'.

When it times out, the message I get is 'Error retrieving update from download server. Please check your internet connection and selct Retry to try again.'

I'm on dial-up. Is there anything I can do about it (short of switching to broadband)? Do you suppose it would work if I tried it late at night? And why would downloading that huge new release (13.25 mb) work? Could they be giving higher priority on the server to downloading new releases than to downloading updates? It took about 50 minutes to download the new release at around 2 PM Wednesday.

  2. stopzilla is malware - not what anyone should pay for.
    - It has false positives
    - It's difficult to completely remove
    - It slows your computer down
    - The awards they list on their site are fake
    - The pop-up blocker doesn't work very well

I don't know how it would work for dialup, but there are freeware download helpers out there that let you resume a partially finished download. I don't use them, but someone here with more experience with them might be able to give you some names or links. Or you could try a internet search for ' download helper '

    Followup:

I reported the problem to Stopzilla and they replied that there's a known problem with dial-up updates and a fix should be forthcoming within two weeks.

    We shall see....
