Here's a "hail Mary" thing to try: In Word Pad, add a couple of extra characters at the very beginning, and to the very end. Save as "XXXXtemp.srt." Then re-open the file, and delete those extra characters. Re-save and try using that file. There's sometimes a funny end-of-file problem (or a header problem) that can be fixed by this operation. And even if does nothing, at least you'll not have wasted much time in trying it.

  2. Open the SRT file with Notepad. Does it look ok? I've had problems with Unicode SRT files in the past. I don't remember what the symptom was though.

  3. Did both of the above - saved as a different filename & renamed the avi to the same ... WMP plays it fine, but no subtitles. Jubler opened it & saved it as an .ass file ... erm ... ?

  4. WMP has no ability to display SRT subtitles. You must use some external software like VOBSUB.

  5. At last ... I have no idea why TMPgenc didn't like the subtitles, but I just tried WinAvi with the avi & srt in the same folder & it came out perfectly ... I have no idea why, but I think it had something to do with the subtitles - the avi on its own was fine, just went wrong when I put the srt file in the same folder & tried to play / convert it.
Thank you all for your help, guys.
