Do i have to make isos to archive my dvds or can I drag the av ts files windows explorer sees into a folder and reburn them on dvd at a later date?

If the disc has copy protection (i.e. commercial disc) then you will have to use something like DVDFab HD Decrypter. You don't have to create an ISO file.

A ISO is just a container. Not really needed for archiving. If you had a VIDEO_TS folder and a AUDIO_TS folder, the ISO would keep them together in a single package with a title. But so would a folder.
