converting video size??? Help Please

I made a 36 minute video (avi) for my parents anniversary of their lives, recorded it to VHS tape, everything worked great ands looks nice.
I did create the video in 340x320 no frame drop intel codec.
I am now trying to convert it over to SVCD to watch it on DVD.
I have converted it to mpeg, but still everything I try to do either distorts the Video in width or length.

I forgot to add
How do I fix the distortion, or can I.
I have a couple of 3 minute old videos and a lot of still pictures with a lot of special effects.
Do I have to start all over again?
Do I have to have the Still Pictures a certain size? and the start video I created using Ulead 3d, what size should I make it?
Should I start all over and make everything 352x288?
