    I'm slightly confused.

Norton Ghost is started from the windows GUI but then it must restart the machine in it DOS variant to enable it to actually do the work (using a special boot partition it creates). This is to ensure the volume being backed up is locked and not changed during backup (otherwise it would fail to verify and the backup would not be valid).

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

I use a Win98/SE boot cd with Ghost (from Systemworks 2002) on it. I used Nero (create bootable CD) and http://ellocosprojectx.com/files/BOOT98SC.EXE (put on a floppy) as the startup files Nero needs for the dos files. I added the dos Ghost (2002) files GHOST.EXE and MOUSE.COM to a SubDir and created a simple ghost.bat file as additional files (not on boot part of cd)

    cd\ghost
    mouse.com
    ghost.exe

If you can't boot your Windows system this can save you. Obviously you need the images either on another partition or on a dvd to restore. If you are using NTFS, you'll need to keep your images on a FAT32 partition, Ghost 2002 can only save to a FAT32 partition but can restore an NTFS structure. I'm not sure about Ghost 2003.

On my system the boot cd becomes the A: drive and with 5 HD partitions the first cd is the R: drive, on my system the ghost program is now on the r: drive (a: is the boot part of the cd).

    cd\ r:
    ghost.bat

Go to http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl and click the 4th link on the page to learn how to do this even if you have no floppy drive. Other useful info may be found at this site including how to make a bootable USB flash drive. You might also be interested in the 3rd link on that page to learn Seagate Disc Wizard or Maxblast 5 can be downloaded and used for free if you have a Seagate or Maxtor internal drive, and you can then use either Seagate Disc Wizard or Maxblast 5 instead of Ghost.
