    I've been using Avidemux 2.4. I like it because it allows me to add black borders to the top/bottom of the video. Problem is, it keeps crashing if I convert a MKV (h264) to anything else. Sometimes I get lucky and it actually finishes, mostly not though.

    Anyone know any other ways or other programs that convert as well as have the ability to add borders and do subtitles?

    It converts to pretty much any format except WMV (which is no great loss) and is very flexible and powerful. Perhaps you should take a look at it before passing judgment.
