Editing and Effects

I've been looking at some videos online and I see that people are able to take them and add in text, effects between shots, etc. and in general edit what they film rather than using it directly from the camera? How is this achieved? Will I need special software?

So you know enough to post in the editing forum, and call your post editing and effects, yet you aren't quite bright enough to, say, read through some of the posts in the editing forum to see what they have to say ? Or to perhaps look in the tools section under, oh I don't know, editors, and see what there is ? You honestly know the term "editing", seem to understand what it means, and yet can't put 2 and 2 together to get an answer ?

I know I sound rude, but the quality of question being asked here is get ridiculous.
