From what I can gather, the registry merge fix referred to in Doom9 (and Autogk faq) is to find "proxyoff.reg" in the path:

    Code:
    C:\Program Files\AutoGK\VDubMod\aviproxy
and double click on and 'merge' it into your registry.

I personally haven't had a need to do this, although I wonder if it is related to AuxSetup.exe / install handler?
Anyway, maybe others with a bit more knowledge can advise on this 'fix'?

According to http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/virtualdub_procedures.htm under the heading 'Installing Frameserver support', the proxyon.reg is used for frameserving, and should be turned off after encoding.

Long time ago, I did use vdub for frameserving (DVD2AVI - vfapi - vdub - TMPGenc).

If somehow it has been enabled on your PC, the options to disable would be:
    1. right click proxyoff.reg, select merge, or
    2. double click proxyoff.reg, and click 'Yes' to the message "Are you sure you want to add the information...to the registry".

HOWEVER, I am no expert on this, and as it effectively edits your registry, maybe wait for others to offer comment on this and any possible side-effects before you try it.
