    Hey all.

    After googling, it seems as though the only way to have MP4 thumbnail previews is to add this reg fix to the registry:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]

    If MP4 files are the only files on my PC that don't have thumbnail previews, wouldn't I only need to add this to the registry?:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @={c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}

    Any info and/or advice is appreciated.

    Let us know how it works.

    I found a regpatch a couple of months ago that was supposed to add thumbnail view for MKV and MP4 and after installing it, my computer crashed every time I tried to open a file or a program. There was no regfixpatch to undo the damage so I had to reinstall Windows since the OS had become unusable.

    It was my understanding that Windows can create thumbnails for all files in which WMP is the default player and has the proper codecs for playback. As I don't use WMP as my media player and I don't use thumbnail view for my folders, I can't verify.

    Well, I haven't added the regfix yet. I'm still undecided on whether to add the regfix or convert the MP4 files to AVI files.

    Yea, I was wondering about that. I currently have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed on my comp. The default player for MP4 files is Media Player Classic (which was part of the K-Lite Codec Pack). I have tried with WMP11 as the default, but no luck with preview thumbnails either.

    Try this:

    - Click Start -> Run -> type:
    regsvr32 shmedia.dll
    - Click OK
    - Reboot

    Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck. Only the MP4 files are currently absent of preview thumbnails.

    Yea, that was one of the first things that I tried. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if Explorer recognizes an MP4 file in order to utilize the Haali Media Splitter thumbnail extraction option.

    That's the guide I used the first time that left my computer unusable. Not sure why. I tried it again except I did not install the MKV registry patch and it showed the thumbnails just fine by setting Haali splitter to yes for thumbnails. I did not set the offset though.

    Since that worked, I got brave and installed the MP4 patch and now my MP4 thumbnails show up. I must've had something else installed before that was conflicting with the Haali splitter cause I could not do anything without Windows crashing.

    Yea, that's why I'm hesitate about installing a regpatch at this point. I'm wondering if there are any other options out there.

    Does anyone know how well the Pazera MP4 to AVI converter works? I've read a few reviews here and there, but wanted to get some other opinions and/or advice as well.

  12. I have a similar problem now, except it is affecting all IMAGE (not video) files. Can you tell me a registry hack that will fix this issue? I've already tried clearing the thumbnail cache, and all other non-registry-hack solutions that people have suggested.

    You don't need a "hack", you need to try and determine what caused it not to work.

    It would likely be much faster and easier to simply take the time and perform a fresh install of the OS.

    Just for information to original quote... In additon to the normal shown, several others may be present represented by:

    @="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}" PotPlayer
    @="{c5aec3ec-e812-4677-a9a7-4fee1f9aa000}" Icaros
    @="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}" Normal Codec

    If an entry is present but different, you can google it and usually find out which program is stifling your thumbnails.
