So I have an LG RH188H recorder and I have the feeling it's giving up the ghost pretty soon, it's acting wonky, not reading DVDs and such. I have a film that I recorded from VHS on the drive and I want to save that. I have burned it on to DVD but the compression is so bad that it is almost unwatchable. I recorded the film in the highest quality and even though the manual says it supports DVD-DL it clearly does not as I've tried a few times.
Is there any way possible to get the movie file of the internal HD to my computer? I have a mac and a PC so if there are any programs out there that could help then that would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely not.
After you get your new recorder, connect the video output of the old unit to the input of the new recorder. Then simply play and record.Google is your Friend
