  1. hi there, I was just wondering if I were to export an avi,
and then decide to edit that same avi, and then re-export it again.....would that degrade the quality? (my guess is no cuz it's not an analog source........),
and if avi's don't get degraded by this process....does that mean mpg files don't get degraded either?

    Thankyou kindly,

AVI's are digital. Like all digital sources, they cannot degrade in quality as much they're 'exported' resaved etc. But loss in quality can occur when saving to another codec, or when for that specific codec (like DivX - I hate this one) a high compression rate is selected.

Even in TMPGenc. You get sure loss in quality, while the avi is encoded into a very high compression (5Gb SVCD avi into 750Mb MPEG-2 !?) You lose also something by it's resizing : 720x480 (NTSC) becomes 480x480 (or 720x576 (PAL/SECAM) becomes 480x576). If you select 'no resizing' for SVCD, you'll get a non-standard SVCD (= SXVCD). Keep in mind that most standalone DVD-players don't like this type of VCD.

  3. k, this is what I do, can you tell me if I'll get a lost in quality each time?
I export the avi file with mjpeg compression, (640X480), then I import it again into premiere, and edit it at the same frame size, and then re-export it, at 640X480 using Mjpeg compression.........would that give me lots and lots of quality degration if I were to do this like 5 or 6 times?
