    Hello,
I have an avi file of this type, I want to re-encode to mpeg-2.
A couple of things I noticed about how this file is handled,
if I play it in WMP 10, the installed DIVX (version 6.8.5) is being used.

However, if I drag the file into virtualdub, it tells me FFDshow is being used
(even though ffdshow DIV3 is set to disabled in both decoder and VFW)
If I drag the file to virtualdubmod, it says DIVX 685 codec is being used to decode the file
Why this difference? Vdubmod using dshow?

If I change the 4cc of the file to DIVX it no longer plays properly, the screen remains black.

In the Divx decoder config utility I set it to auto deblock; I've seen it to be useful on some files
when used in virtualdub to reencode. Is this "deblock" active when the file is playing in dshow also?

If it is, I can use avisynth / directshowsource on this DIV3 file.

    Any thoughts on this appreciated.

  2. If you render the .avi file in graphstudio/graphedit, what decoder is being used? - this is the default directshow decoder and will be the one used when you use DirectShowSource()

If it's DivX, and that's what you want, then use an .avs script with DirectShowSource()

If not, you can force any decoder you want with graphstudio, by making a .grf and DirectShowSource()

Another approach would be to increase the merit of DivX decoder, (until that becomes the default directshow decoder,) or lower the merit of the other MPEG-4 ASP decoders

If it plays in graphedit, the DIVX filter is used.

One more weirdness - if I open it in virtualdub and choose the
file of type "directshow input driver", the file also does not open
    properly, giving the error
"unable to seek dshow graph error 80004001" - and the screen remains black.

    However, directshow source works fine.

You could install the DivX 3.11 codec.

  5. Just turning off the VFW Div3 decoder in ffdshow isn't enough to keep it from decoding Div3. You also have to turn off the MP43 decoder. Maybe some of the other MPEG4 decoders too.
