LAN = Local Area Network = in your house/building/office/bedroom
WAN = Wide Area Network = out side you house/building = Your Internet service provider
LAN $ pretty cheap, just a switch and 2 computer connected to it
ISP $ all depends on what they charge you in New Zealand -
I'm doing this for an assignment and the question says: Outline the differences between LANs and WANs using the following headings ; Costs, Access, Distances, Digital data transfer rates.
However I am having trouble finding information. -
You can look here for some general information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_area_network
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_area_network
But the questions about 'Costs, Access, Distances, Digital data transfer rates' don't seem to make a lot of sense.
The only costs with a LAN is the cost of the equipment and possibly the labor cost to set it up and maintain in, if it was in a commercial business setting.
Access mostly depends on the settings used with the LAN, most commonly in the router.
Distances depend on the type of cabling or wireless setup used. Same with digital transfer rates. They could be as slow as dialup or as fast as fiber optics.
A WAN could be a internet provider. The costs and other info you can get from one of them easily enough, but there are lots of options for speed, cost and access. -
Cost, Access, Distance and Digital Transfer rates make perfect sense in the context of a corporate WAN where you have "private" T1, T3, microwave, or fiber links between facilities.
@OP - I don't know what class you're taking, but the information you're teacher is looking for should be in your textbooks and classroom materials. The questions are too broad to be answered on an open forum by people from all over the world."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard

no, everything can be found on the internet, at this school the funds are limited so small classes miss out.

well i did look everywhere else before i posted my question on here.

ls and gins1inger,
exactly
I wish kids would stop coming here asking people to do their school assignments. It's weird that there have been quite a few that came to Videohelp.com and headed straight to Computers for programming help.
Like this guy, straight to computers, then mostly in OT. I'll never understand people who come here just for OT when they can find sites specifically geared towards other like-minded people. -
Well sorry.
my question was answered so I will figure out how to stop this forum thing or something and you can all stop complaining. -
Edited: Nevermind.
