The old vlc media player, http://www.videolan.org/mirror-geo.php?file=vlc/0.8.6i/win32/vlc-0.8.6i-win32.7z
Maybe smplayer will work in win98, http://downloads.sourceforge.net/smplayer/smplayer-portable-0.6.7.7z or else some mplayer release. -
The only player I know that plays multiple formats and is a single standalone .exe is Media Player Classic, and the newer MPC Home Cinema version. MPC HC plays more formats out of the box than MPC does, but neither plays as many formats VLC.
There is aportable version of VLC that doesn't require installation, but I'm not sure if it will run under Win98. Win98 has been out of support for so long, most developers have forgotten all about it. http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
Edit : Try the portable version of MPlayer instead : http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/mplayer_portable this should support Win98Read my blog here.
