Are you talking about mkv2vob? for playback on a ps3?

Or do you want a standard dvd? Then use dvd flick or convertxtodvd, if they don't find the subs then extract the subtitles from the mkv using mkvextract first and load manually in those apps.

Thanks for your reply. I would like my MKV to play on a standard DVD player. I used convertxtodvd to do tyhe coversion. However after the conversion ~1hrs later, i can only hear audio from my rigth speaker but not the left. Tried on the MKV file with both audio from both speaker.

What went wrong during the conversion?

Is there any software the able to do the conversion without subtitle loss in one pass?

    To baldrick -

Your first reply. mkv2vob on ps3 with subtitles.
    Is it possible without re-encoding?

Possibly. However MKV is just a container. The video and audio inside that container could be anything. If they are not compliant with the PS3 then they will have to be re-encoded. You may also find that some resolutions do not display properly in some containers.

Post a mediainfo of a one of your mkv files so we can see what you are working with

    Ok will try that.
But I read that mkvīs can be converted to mp4 whitout re-encoding,
and that you, after that, should be able to add srtīs to the mp4 file
and it should work in PS3. Complicated process although.
    Is that true?

Again, it depends on what's in the mkv file. An mkv can contain xvid, divx, mpeg-2, H264 etc for video, and wav, DTS, AC3, AAC, MP3, OGG etc for audio. Some of this can go into an MP4 container, some can't. And even if it can, it may not play on the PS3 anyway.

For example, I can download a 720p quicktime trailer in MOV format from the quicktime website. I can repackage that into an MP4 container that is perfectly legal. It won't play on my PS3 through. For that I need to re-encode.

Again, the answer is a firm maybe. H264 video certainly works on the PS3 if encoded correctly, but not all encoding combinations will work. Again, I refer you back to exhibit B, your honour, the Quicktime trailer. Also H264 video (this time with AAC audio), and the video has to be re-encoded to play back on the PS3.

Post a mediainfo Tree output of the video in question.

    OK will give a try.
My goal is no re-encoding with subs.
Maybe itīs easier just to stream it?!

If you stream it you will have to re-encode (on the fly) to get the subs displayed
