    What determines the speed a CD or a DVD is burned?

    Is it the processor? - Pentuim 4, Dual Core, Quad Core or the new Quad Core i7

    Is it the the RAM? 1 gig , 2 gig, 3 gigi or more?

    Is it the the disk burner? I use a SONY DRX - 840U (20X max DVD/CD burner)

    Is it the software? I use NERO software (last's years version)

    Or is it a combination of these?
    What is the fastest disk burner available? I have watched my SONY DRX - 840U. It doesn't always burn a single layer DVD at 20X. Why?

    1) The burning device itself;

    2) The disc itself;

    3) The burning application itself.

    Try ImgBurn or cdrecord if you want to be able to record CDs at 1X speed.

    OK. Thank you.

    Question: What is the fastest DVD burner available?

    Will a Blue Ray DVD burner be faster than my SONY DVD burner if I am burning a standard SONY single layer DVD?

    Dumb question with obvious answer. If the BluRay burner can burn DVDs faster than 20X speed then of course it is (theoretically) faster than your current 20X burner. You might as ask if a V8 will go faster than a little straight 4.

    Of course if you are only using 16X media then it doesn't matter much, as they will top out at 16X in most cases anyway.

    And you have to be able to keep the data transfer up to the burner while maintaining those rates or they will drop off.

    Finally, no burner will burn at those speeds from beginning to end. The burn speed slowly increases across the duration of the burn. You don't start at 20X, and maintain that speed until the disc is burned.

    And you have to consider that a BD burner is putting a whole lot more data on a disc than a DVD burner. Speed wise, a BD burner is very fast. The same holds true for a CD VS DVD burner. A CD burner at 52X may be slower than a DVD burner at 12X if you consider the amount of data transfered.

    And many newer DVD burners won't operate at 1X or sometimes even 2X, at least with good results. Just not designed for it and neither is the newer media. 16X - 20X is also pushing a DVD burner up towards the limits. Unless you use good DVD media, I wouldn't bother for the few seconds saved on a burn VS the risk of making a coaster, Just my opinion.

    From 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left on this page:

    Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
    1x (CLV) = about 58 minutes
    2x (CLV) = about 29 minutes
    2.4x (CLV) = about 24 minutes
    4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
    6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
    8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
    12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
    16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes
    Notice the burn time doesn't decrease much above 12X.

    Wow, you guys know alot about this stuff!!!

    So, a dumb question.................Can I connect two of my Sony 20X burners (or two Blue Ray burners) to my PC so two burners are running at exactly the same time?

    Is there a burner that can burn two (or three DVDs) at the same time - that doesn't cost a million bucks?

    Thanks to all for the advice!

    if i understood right, yes you can have several burners in your computer burn simultaneously, no need for an expensive duplicator... software your burning with has to be able to burn to several devices at once... afaik, nero can do that

    Yes, Nero can burn to multiple drives at once. However I believe that it only does it if you are burning the same material to each drive.

    You may be able to run multiple instances of Imgburn if you point them at different drives, and burn different material to each drive.

    And if using Nero with two or more burners, all burners will likely run slower. (Don't hold me to that, It's just what I remember. ) If so, you may not save that much time running two burns at the same time.

    What edDV posted is a better way. You can get separate drive controllers and set up a regular PC or a standalone case with multiple burners if you plan to do this often. The controllers can be found for as low as the price of a handful of burners.

    Hello bryankendall;

    Yes, some versions of Nero offer multiple burner support.
    Another software application that provides for multiple burners is Alcohol 120%. Out of curiosity, I have used it on occasion to burn several copies simultaneously and as redwudz suggested, the burn speed decreased so that the net gain of saved time was small and to me, not worth the effort.

    Remember, if you are burning multiple copies simultaneously the chance of failed burn(s) increases and if there is an unknown problem or glitch in the master, you will burn so many unusable copies before the error is recognized.

    Whether you use a software application or a stand-alone duplicator, be certain your master is error-free and that you use high quality blank media such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
