    Hello,

I am converting a few movies. They are in the vob format with the VIDEO_TS folder.

    - I would like to keep good quality even if not reducing the size so much.

    - And if possible to be able to read them on a play station 3.

Could someone, please, give me some advice?

    1. Which format should I use?
MP4, M4V, MKP, AVI or OGM

    2. Which video codec should I use?
    H.264, MPEG-4(FFmpeg) or MPEG-4(XviD)

    3. What Frame Rate should I use?
    Same As Source?

    4. I am using Two-Pass encoding. Is this the best way?

    5. On quality should I define a Target Size (MB), an Avg BitRate (kbps) or Constant Quality (%)?

    6. On sound should I use:
    AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC3?
Stereo, Dolby Surround or Dolby Pro Logic II?
And what about the bit rate?

I've created a basic definition but I really would like some advice.

    Thank You,
    Miguel

The Sony PS3 supports a file format called M2TS which allows for H.264 video along with AC-3 audio.

So really that is what you should be using ---> M2TS

tsMuxeR can mux H.264 video with AC-3 into M2TS. Also XVID4PSP can do it as well.

  3. Does the PS3 play MPG files? If so you can remultiplex the VOB files into MPG files with VOB2MPG. It will much faster than reencoding and there will be no quality loss. The MPG file will be about the same size as the sum of the VOB files though.

    Hi,

I am planning to buy the following:
    http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=572&language=en

But just in case I am considering a format that would be also playable also in Play Station 3:
    http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html

I am using the following encoder:
    http://handbrake.fr/
    REVIEW: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2096881/handbrake_dvd_ripping_software_review/

I would like to use H.264 since it seems to have a better quality ... Or not?

And use the file format MKV since I think it is possible to play in ITunes and many others and supports H.264 ...

I would like advice on two situations:
    1. Care about PlayStation 3 compatibility
    2. Not care about PlayStation 3 compatibility

    Thanks,
    Miguel
