I am trying to convert avi to mpg in TMPGEnc and the result has no audio.

When I load it in TMPGEnc, it shows DirectShow filter in the audio field, but there is no sound.

I have installed codecs (a few packs from free-codecs.com)

    can anyone help?

Check the file with Gspot or MediaInfo and see if it has MP3 VBR audio. TMPGEnc chokes on that. Or you may have another format TMPGEnc doesn't understand or just a bad file. Or you may have to raise the merit of the audio codec so TMPGEnc will use it. Sorry, it's been a while since I used the program. Main thing is to find out what you have for a audio format.

If you've now installed a bunch of codec packs you may have some new problems. They tend to destroy each other along with your other working codecs.

which version of tmpeg? if it's 2.5 convert the mp3 to wav, then use that as the audio src. vbr mp3 is BAD!!, but i have seen it done before with avi's that were meant to muxed into a mp4 but the dumb bastard never did and posted the avi file . anyhow enough rambleing. demux the mp3 convert to wav and import to tmpeg
if all else fails read the manual

When I used TMPGEnc more, I loaded the AVI file into VirtualDub, and with full audio processing, saved out the MP3 VBR audio as a WAV. Then I added the original AVI and the new WAV to TMPGEnc and encoded with them. AVIDemux should also work for that. Quite a few encoders have problems with VBR audio, probably because the length is difficult to judge. TMPGEnc may accept the VBR MP3, but the sync will usually be off.

BTW, in Gspot, you want to look to the lower left and see if the green 'VBR' box is lit. That will tell you if you have VBR (Variable Bit Rate) audio.
