  1. Hi Everyone,

I hope someone can help me. I got some DVDs from UK and I can't play it here in Canada.
I would like to know how to make my DVD players Region free or at least play Region 2 DVDs. I have a Sony DVP-NS55P and recently bought Insignia NS-CADVD.

    Thanks,
    friendsfan

"Region Free" is only half of your battle. You also need the DVD player to convert the PAL format video to your NTSC format television. Your odds are less than 50/50 that your players can convert PAL to NTSC.

    Also....not all players are hackable.

hech54 is certainly right that if your players can't convert PAL to NTSC you're screwed. You could always rip the DVDs and re-burn them - that will remove the region coding but you'll still have to test PAL playback capability.

I wouldn't hold my breath about being able to make either of these region free. We have some Insignia posts further down that don't look too promising. I think Sony sucks so it's been quite a while since I've dealt with their players. Typically they aren't known for being able to be hacked, but there's a decent chance your Sony may be able to convert PAL to NTSC, so ripping and re-burning might be an option for you to consider if you can't find a hack.

Hollywood has gotten to just about all of the DVD player manufacturers and convinced them to stop producing players that consumers can put into region free mode. It's getting harder every day to find a player that can be put into region free mode. Some manufacturers, like Samsung, lock down every player they sell anywhere in the world and they can't be changed. What's really stupid about this is that the ultimate result of this policy will be an increase in piracy, which is probably what Hollywood thinks they are stopping with this.
