Anyone download IE8 yet?

I've got it up and running for the first time a few minutes ago.

Some notables
Address bar drop down show a heck of a lot more stuff
Grouped tabs (turn green, blue...etc) You can right click and close a group of tabs
Moved add to favorites star to the favorites bar
Tools/Developer Tool (pretty cool at seeing website code)

I know there's a lot more, but these caught my eye right off the bat

How many meg is the download. Same as FF or Opera or the usual M$ bloatware of 35meg +??

16mb download, then it grab a few updates as it installs. It's about 1.5mb more than the EI7 download install package

I did the download as apposed to the activeX install.

Plus during the install it asks if you want complete (more downloads) or custom. I choise custom and only added the inprivate add on (I think)

I think when Firefox releases it's new version with the updated javascript engine it'll be far better than IE all over again. It'll be better than Chrome as well. The only thing Chrome really has an edge in is how fast it processes javascript.

IE8 is definitely an improvement, but one thing really irks me. I can't slip stream it into an XP install with nLite. According to their boards MS purposefully designed it to only slipstream into Vista and above, and they are apparently quite smug about it. Someone will find a way around it though, just like with WMP11.

OK, here go my first impressions about the "beast":

IE 8 is definitely slower than IE6, period.
Looks like an "updated" version of IE7.
Still unable to open links in maximized new windows
(exactly like IE3, IE4, IE5 and IE6).
Still unable to open a new window that is *not* a copy of the page you were
looking at (exactly like IE3, IE4, IE5 and IE6).

Does not let me get rid of the Bookmark button.

Does not let me move the menu bar to the top of the window.

Does not tell me how to get rid of the "Live Search" bar
(damn it, my Start Page, «file:///C:/START.html»,
already has a huge hyperlink to Google, so why the heck would I
ever need a search bar )

IE8 bricked Outlook 2000 on my main machine, so I had to remove it and revert to IE6.

There is no excuse for still using IE6. The company I work for has even stopped testing for it.

What if you're using an older Windows setup that "isn't allowed" to update to IE7, like Win9X/ME/2K?

@ai haibara - then your screwed. I can't even install firefox 3 on an ancient win 98 pentium 2 laptop I have. I think firefox 2 is the max for me on that thing. Though I hardly use it anymore so its not that big of a deal to me.

Yeah, you can only install up to the latest version of FF2 on Win98. I'm not sure about FF3. No big deal, though - I have FF2 installed on my Win98 towers, and it works fine. Now, if I were to pull out the old Win3 laptop...

I've heard some businesses still use Win9X setups, though, and they're probably still using IE6.

OK, now that I've managed to transform IE8 into a IE6 capable of tabbed-browsing,
I no longer have a good-reason to uninstall it.
Which doesn't mean I will stop preferring K-Meleon, of course.

At my work, a lot of our customers are still using IE 6, so we still have to test using it, as well as IE 7 and FF 2/3. We've got VirtualPC images to test with IE6, and portable versions of FF 2, so we are able to test on everything.

Many of our customers at work use systems where the users are not allowed to upgrade the machines, the IT department standardized on IE 6 and isn't ready to upgrade yet, so whaddaya know, we still have lots of folks that CAN'T use anything other than IE 6.

OK, here go my first impressions about the "beast":

IE 8 is definitely slower than IE6, period.
Looks like an "updated" version of IE7.
Still unable to open links in maximized new windows
(exactly like IE3, IE4, IE5 and IE6).
Still unable to open a new window that is *not* a copy of the page you were
looking at (exactly like IE3, IE4, IE5 and IE6).

Does not let me get rid of the Bookmark button.

Does not let me move the menu bar to the top of the window.

Does not tell me how to get rid of the "Live Search" bar
(damn it, my Start Page, «file:///C:/START.html»,
already has a huge hyperlink to Google, so why the heck would I
ever need a search bar )

Tested on a PC and a new few days old Vista SP1 laptop. While on a PC (fast and beefed-up box, 8GB RAM etc) it was somewhat usable within its limited capabilities, but it hogged the Vista laptop really really badly.

I have uninstalled this sick piece of shit and I'm sure I won't touch it again at least until it comes bundled with bunch of hotfixes on a retail Windows 7 disc

If they use it on intranet only, I see no problem with that.
If they use IE6 for browsing the World Wild Web then I agree, these IT guys are most likely shooting themselves in a foot LOL

You live in a dream world.
I suppose we are going to rewrite a ton of code, and force our vendors to rewrite all their code everytime MS/FF/Opera comes out with new versions of their browser?
I have computers that run apps only on Win9x, they must run in a DOS and they must use autoexec/config in order to run properly. Can I tell the board we need to dump this software because it's out dated and no longer supported, Yep, and I have several times. They come back with, is it working fine, Yes it is. How much will it cost to replace it system wide. 7 figures. They say make do with our current system.

Small IT shops can move faster, but large IT shops must evaluate systems much differently.

I've notice that IE8 uses less memory than IE7. I thought IE7 was a real resource hog. IE8 was a pleasent surprise
I'm still messing with the registry to see if I can make the URL bar smaller
