Rand did a study of global DVD piracy and has linked it with terrorism! Are you on the terror watch list?

The brief is titled, "Film Piracy and its Connection to Organized Crime and Terrorism".

Actually, true piracy is the duplication and sales of unauthorized works, like the guys who run the CD/DVD burner farms and sell on the street, at flea markets, or even eBay.

If you download a few songs or movies here and there, you're not really a pirate. You're either simply naive or a cheap bastard. On the other hand, the place from where you are downloading the stuff...

so is it piracy if I get movies from the Redbox for $1 each, bring them home...rip em'...take the originals back and burn my own copies?

How about if I rip them on my hard drive because I don't have time to watch them, but delete them immediately after I watch them on my computer?

OR how about if I burn them to watch them at a later date, and after watching them I break the disc?

How about if I've purchased a movie, have made a backup of it for my own use, my son who lives with me and is my dependant and has viewed the movie with his mother and I in our living room, takes backup copy with him on trip, falls in love decides to stay there and keeps the backup copy of the movie...Piracy?

you know I do not consider myself to be a cheap bastard but it seems to me that the more technology has advanced the more expensive things have gotten and somehow I just can't seem to fit that in my head.

It seems to me if the process is quicker and the materials are cheaper then cost to the consumer should go down. That is what befuddles me...how on God's Green Earth is it more expensive to produce a music CD than it is to produce a cassette tape of the same album? What...it's not you say? Well I'll be the son of a June bug...then WHY OH WHY does it cost me $20 for a CD, when I use to pay $9 for the cassette? Shouldn't the CD be CHEAPER?

But all is not lost, people are greedy I understand...why charge $6 for something you can get $20 out of? That's just good business...right? Well...except for that part of the population who says "FU" and pirates your material. NOW your greedy @$$ is still make $20 per CD, except you're selling a whole lot less of them...and I for one am without sympathy for your greedy @$$ and at some level I think you deserve it.

    [/rant]

I would also like to highlight the all time "chasing your tail" activity of "encryption" of DVD movies. I find nothing more humorous than those people spending all that time and money to come up with a "new encryption" so people can't pirate their movies...only to have it broken in less than 2 days. Hill-LARRY-us!!

Seems to me music piracy was not much of a problem with the old 33 records and even when cassette recorders came out, you had to keep the house quiet to record a song on tape, or sit for 3 hours listening to the radio to catch it only to have the &*@#$ DJ talk of the beginning and end.

Sure, pay me millions of dollars, and I'll say any dumbass thing you want. Companies like this often just reverse engineer information to create the expected outcome from the funding client. Are we shocked?
