I need to help figuring out how to add a black background to just the white letters of my subtitles. The problem is that the white letters will sometimes disappear into the white colors of the movie. I am using Subtitle Workshop and I am sure there is a way to do it on there, but I can't figure it out. I would appreciate the help. Thank you.

If you're talking about the "Video Preview" window of Subtitle Workshop,
just call the "Settings" applet, and go to Video Preview --> Subtitles.

Normally you set the font, colour, position in the authoring app.
And also, subtitles usually use three colours: one for text fill (often white), one for text outline (often black or grey) and background (usually transparent). You probably want to add a black outline.
You can adjust the colours after authoring using DVDSubedit. -
The subtitle format is .ass. I want to burn the movie to a dvd, but I have to figure out this subtitle issue first. Subedit seems to allow me to change the color of the subtitles, but I need a black outline around the subtitles so I can see the words clearly no matter what color is in the movie. I don't think I can do this with subtitle workshop and if subedit can do it then I don't know how. I'm sure I am not the only one who has had this problem before.

Are you converting the video to a dvd-video with subs? Then it usually depends on the converter if it can adjust the font settings.
