Actually, I once saw a book that had the cover ripped off of it. I couldn't judge it, so I refrained from reading it.

greymalkin, that's not a fair comparison. You could simply jump into a volcano to accomplish your goal, but a volcano wouldn't leave the hard drive intact. Well, unless it was a virtual volcano, and we all know that they are in the realm of fantasy, like flying cars. -
There is only one reason that someone would want to do this - - a bad one. The only thing we don't know is - what is the bad reason. It's probably some sort of vandalism or a more probable reason is to be able to do a quick "system destroy" operation. I could see how a drug dealer would like to be able to wipe his system fast and easy when the cops are banging on the front door. But whatever the reason is, this is a WEIRD question.
-
definitely a bad reason, but perhaps not drug/piracy operation as then you would be concerned about more than just some joe blow not being able to boot into it..then again if you are dumb you may think that's all you need to do...
and my previous post was definitely ON TOPIC. common sense should dictate you can't use an operating system to delete itself. -

windows is obviously safegarded against such...if it wasn't, every idiot would delete their OS

Maybe you'll get some error messages in recent version of Windows, but I'm sure you can override them. After all, when you do an upgrade, you have to delete system files before you replace them.
Otherwise, most OSes include a hex editor, or some low level function that you can use to zero out segments of the hard disk, circumventing any file protection.
When an OS is running, it's in RAM. Deleting the hard disk files will not affect it until it looks for a new file/program to run, by which time it's too late. Then it will crash. -

Then, the bullet thing, then I'd pry open the case and pour lemon juice in there, then let it bake for 10 hours at 500degrees 'til golden brown.
(and no use of software)

It's really funny to think about the nightmares this felonious thug will have worrying about the data coming back to bite him no matter what he does. I can just picture the night sweats and jumping awake screaming after the latest bad dream about his data coming alive again - It would make a good horror movie. What would be a good name for this horror movie? How about "Revenge of the Data" or maybe "The Immortal Hard Drive"?
It makes me think about Robert Brewster the alien character in Terminator 3 who could always reconstruct himself even when he is blown to bits and melted.
