stop using avg. its a crappy AV.
best free ones are avira or avast imho.

  2. I have not used Avast before but folks recommend it. I never heard of Avira.

I am using Adaware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SuperAntispyware.

Where did the OP even mention that he used AVG? All I read was he used Norton (which is just as bad mind you).

Yes Avira is good too I just prefer avast.

  4. I have avira/spybot/ad aware and scotty watchdog installed have not had a speed decrease or virus/malaware in years.

Using most clean up or virus/spyware removal tools in safe mode can also reap benefits. as can doing a defrag under safe mode. use safe mode with networking and see if the internet is still slow if not then you know something in full mode is screwing it up.

under the start command type msconfig and look to see if there is anything in the start up tab that could be slowing you down, do you have stuff like mywebsearch installed, all that crap can gum it up.

Try MS malicious software removal that is good

is something I have used to good effect.

My mistake. I did not see that you were using Norton.

When my computer slowed down it was an AVG problem. How I found it might work for any slow down computer problem. Open the "Windows Task Manager" and click on "Processes". Google the file names of the executable files that are active - that you can visually see running by changes in the "CPU" and "Mem Usage" readings. Look for high readings or just any activity at all while most other files are static.

In my case it was "avgchsvx.exe" and other avg files. If they are problem files Google results will show other people having the same difficulties.
Depends what the definition of the word inhale is.

An earlier post noted TeaTimer.EXE was running. I believe that belongs to SpyBot Search and Destroy. I found TeaTimer totally bogged down a machine I had it on. Granted, it was an older machine. I got rid of TeaTimer and the performance came back. After that I stopped using SpyBot and switched to MalwareBytes.

  8. yeah, I dont even know what TeaTimer does. But it does slow down the computer. After reading so many poor reviews of Spybot, I decided to remove it from the computer. I think Adaware works better anyways.

  9. stupid question, but I noticed my Superanitspyware icon on my desktop is showing up as nothing. It does not have the correct icon, how do I fix that?

Right click, select "Properties", then "Shortcut" tab, "Change Icon..." button. You should then just select the .exe for the program (usually the icon is part of the program file).

I missed that. :P You're absolutely right. I found that TeaTimer caused system instability, and stopped using it (and SpyBot as well) a couple of years ago. Now using MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  12. Certain MS updates can slow your computer too, I'm trying to figure out which one in Oct-Nov. did it cause it affects other computers I know of too.

Windows already has a MalwareBytes type of thing, Run: MRT

i have cookies disabled except for a dozen sites i need to log-in.
    my firewall blocks webscripts/ads.

i run spybot once a year and it hasnt found a single thing in 3 years lol..
i tried malwarebytes and it didnt find anything either. personally, i've heard
more bad things about adaware than spybot. never had a problem with it, but
as said, i dont really need it either.

ps: iirc teatimer is spybot's realtime protection against malware.

  14. ok guys, some weird trojans/malware/spyware is on my computer that causes it to strangely redirect me. i.e. when I search for something in google, and I try to click on the links, it redirects me to another weird website. Also this weird google ad keeps popping up. I think it is some survey or something. I use Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SuperAntispyware and Adaware and have removed the stuff but it keeps on coming back.

I'm trying to use PC Tools Spyware Doctor and CC Cleaner now, but it just seems like a hit and miss with these programs. My computer is weird so I cannot reboot in safe mode to use SUPERantispyware's Bootsafe. Always gets hosed up and freezes whenever I try to restart computer.

  15. I guess the best thing to do is reformat. Is there any free programs I should immediately install that automatically keeps these viruses and malware from getting into computer when browsing? I know these programs can do a full scan on your computer, but none prevents real time (automatic prevention)

So many programs, does anyone really know what works and what doesnt? (as apparent that Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SUPERantiSpyware didnt work for my situation- even though these two are recommended by everyone)

  16. The paid version of SuperAntiSpyware has real-time protection.
The best defense is to not download files from torrent sites and not visit malicious websites. View your email with Outlook(so the AV can scan it) or view from the web based site(eg yahoo.com), Outlook Express is the worst program you can view your email from.
It sounds like your PC is messed up pretty bad, a reformat is your best bet.
