    Hi,
my problem is when i click on an avi file the explorer crashes. I read about this issue but using the k-lite codec tweak tool to remove broken codecs didn't fix my problem.

So i decided to wipe out my codecs an start from scratch. Now i need your help to do this. I dont know how to uninstall codecs manually (may i just delete the *.ax files?)
I thought i'll leave the windows codecs and cyberlink codecs.

I made a codecs list for you to check it.

Try Filmerit for detecting/repairing problems. After removing try reregistering the quartz.dll component of Directx, in Windows go to - Start>Run>regsvr32 quartz.dll

Thanks, i did twice repair some filters with filmerit and after rebooting i think my avi-explorer-crash-issue is solved. Woah!!

But i need a bit more testing to verify that it really got solved.

A bit weird, divx50 and xvid movies are still playing though i uninstalled these codecs yesterday.
but after using filmerit there is no preview of divx and xvid avis in the explorer sidebar. maybe that is the reason why i dont have the issue anymore.

EDIT: I realized that i can play divx and xvid without installing their codecs, because VLC uses its on codecs

The DivX codec is what causes this. There is a fix for it on the DivX website...

Fixing the Explorer crash problem will probably screw up your thumbnail view in Explorer though in which case, you'll need to click Start > Run > regsvr32 shmedia.dll > OK.

After i used filmerit to solve the problems i used the "Explorer Crash When Open A Folder"-option of the divx-tool. Then i ran regsvr32 shmedia.dll
Now i have thumbnail-preview of images, pdfs and wmv and mpgs. And the explorer doesn't crash anymore. But i dont get xvid coded avi previews. I think this is because i dont have divx codec installed. right?!

Problem: In Windows 2000 Professional & Windows XP, Windows Explorer will sometimes crash when a large .AVI file is selected.

Cause: By default when certain file types are selected (music and video files) Windows Explorer will load them into a preview utility (which will be visible on the left side of the folder pane [the right pane]). If the file is large/abnormal then it may cause Windows Explorer to crash. This can often happen with large .AVI files.

Work around: The Windows Explorer file preview utility [in the right pane] can be switched off (customised) in 2000 & XP. Any folder which may contain large/abnormal .AVI files should be customized not to use the file preview utility. To do this just right click in a folder/file pane that might contain abnormal/large .AVI files [the right hand pane]. Then left click on ‘Customize this folder…’. Then use a template/view format which does not use the image preview utility.

  7. I've tried everything in this thread and although the Filmerit did find errors and fixed them, Windows explorer still crashes on AVI files only. Any other suggestions? Is there a way to totally uninstall all Codec files and reinstall them?

Okay, specifically it seems to be the H.264 files that give me the most trouble.
