i usually use dvdshrink to reauthor movie-only dvds (no menus).

the problem is with some movies that contain foreign language dialogue.

instead of burnt-in subtitles for just the foreign dialogue, it has its own subtitle track (example below).

    EXAMPLE SUBTITLE LIST:
    [1] english
    [2] spanish
    [3] french
[4] english <--( only for the foreign language dialogue )

when i reauthor movie-only, i'll omit subtitle tracks 2 & 3 so that it becomes:

    [1] english
[2] english <--( only for the foreign language dialogue )

now, each time i press the SUBTITLE button on my dvd player remote control, it cycles from [1] to [2] to "no subtitles" back to [1] and so on and so forth.

i would like to eliminate the setting of "no subtitles" because it is detrimental to the understanding/enjoyment of the movie if accidentally chosen.
i want it to only cycle between [1] and [2] so that i always have subtitles for the foreign dialogue while having the option to have all the dialogue subtitled if i wanted to.

    is this possible?

    sorry for being long-winded...

Others with more knowledge will likely chime in soon, but until then, here's my understanding: I don't believe that the "no subtitle" option can be eliminated altogether (although I would be delighted to learn otherwise). However, you can have things set so that a certain subtitle track is chosen by default. Maybe that's a workable compromise in your case?

    thanks for the reply tomlee59.

that's what i do right now with dvdshrink.
in my example above, i would set [2] as the default.

i just don't like the idea of the "no subtitle" setting being there in situations like this... it serves no purpose and can only do movie-viewing harm.
    i'm sort of obsessive-compulsive

of course, when there is no foreign dialogue, the "no subtitle" option should definitely be there.

  4. Before reauthoring using DVD Shrink, does going Edit->Preferences->Output File and checking the "Logical remapping of enabled streams" box fix the problem?

If not then you'd have to use PGCEdit to get rid of the now empty subtitle streams.
