    I want to encode an avi with ac3 sound to mpeg with TMPGEnc but the resulting mpg sound is of very low quality. Can someone suggest a method to solve this?

    I suggest you use VirtualDub to split the AC3 track from the AVI, and then convert the AC3 into a WAV file, this will provide best compatibility and quality with TMPGEnc.
