  1. Iam waiting to get my SKY+HD order - I want to know if like the FreesatHD Foxsat set does the SKY+HD upscaling Standard Definition channels aswell? - if so is it a decent upscaler?

my dad has Foxsat FreesatHD and he says the upscaling is quite good
my PHILIPS DVP5980 has brilliant upscaling of DVDs

Iam hoping the SKY+HD box does aswell BUT theres NO mention of it at all by SKY....

  2. My guess is the upscaler in the Sky+HD box is as good as the upscaler in the DVP5980. But the sat box will be starting with lower resolution, overcompressed video. So if you played a movie side by side with the two the DVD would look significantly better.

  3. thanks Jagabo - have you seen both in action? I would be pleased with that - similar processing of image as DVP5980 - ive noticed most SKY channels are poorer quality than say BBC1 , BBC2 and CH4 , CH5 (ITV isnt great either)
the bitrates are obviously lower (as you say overcompressed) - Discovery channel is worst for it at moment as they have about 6 channels including an HD one - theyve recently moved over to 16:9 broadcasts and the programs dont even fill the 16:9 screen the Discovery and Discovery+1 channel have a black pillar to the far right and quality of broadcasts are poor...

but yeah I will be very happy with that , I know the difference that will be made to SD channels - better than what they are now thats for sure - I watch SKY SD through an ARIEL to the HDready set - its actually slightly better than scart (so i think anyway - colors arent as bright but image seems sharper)

  4. yeah this "TV ALREADY HAS UPSCALER" talk ive already had...

    it ALL DEPENDS ON:-

    A) the quality of the TV's upscaler
    B) the quality of the feed you give the TV to upscale (scarts gather noise on image IMO)
    C) the quality of the Upscaler in the SKY+HD box

if LIKE ME you have a cheapo BUSH 32" HDready TV thats got a crap internal upscaler then for me its gunna be MUCH better - my DVP5980 blows me away with THE DARK KNIGHT upscaled to 720p/1080i - I know it also depends on the feed...

    my guess is this:-
for ME - the channels WILL be better but only some will be decent like BBC1 , BBC2 , CH4 , CH5 , SKY1 - all rest will be poorer as per SD
these channels seem to have a better bitrate than others and therefore will upscale better - same with older DVDs on my DVP5980 - theyre better than SD version through SCART but not as good as THE MATRIX RELOADED new boxset upscaled -

if I had a BELTA TV and used decent shielded SCART cables then the difference would be minimal if any at all - probably

I thought that thread made it perfectly clear that the Sky HD box was not a particularly good upscaler?

  6. like i say my current SD setup and TV has VERY crap upscaler anyway so it can ONLY be better

we'll see when i get it anyway... i will post , if I had a SONY BRAVIA or other good HD TV then I wouldnt expect anything better re: upscaling
