I have acquired a video file that came in several chapters. I wanted to rejoin them into one complete file, and, burn the result to DVD. I tried to use "v-dub mod" but while it did rejoin the several chapters into one complete file, the result-time wise, and, size wasn't right. the time was shown to be seemingly hours long instead of being between 80 and 90 minutes long, and, size it was shown to be probably 4x as it should.

While using "V-dub mod" I chose "direct stream," which I understand is the most efficient way to join files together, as well as giving the best result. The individual files are listed as being .avi, with no mention that I can see about being compressed further with xvid, or, similar programs.

Can somebody tell me where I went wrong, because I'm sure that there was some setting I missed that gave this result.

    Thanks.

What are the source files ? Use mediainfo or g-spot to confirm.

Personally, while I think virtualdub is a fantastic program, I don't think is a reliable joiner. Even more so for older versions, which vdub-mod is.

I prefer AVIDemux, which works in a similar manner, but seems to have less issues at the join points.

  3. When you append a segment in VirtualDub it automatically appends other sequentially numbered segments. You don't need to append them individually unless the names aren't sequential. For example:

    file01.avi
    file02.avi
    file03.avi
    file04.avi
    file05.avi

Use File Open to open file1.avi. Use File Append to append file02.avi. 03-05 will automatically be appended (unless you disable the option in the File Append dialog).

gunslinger; the files were avi, further compressed (if that is the right term,) with divx.

jagabo; I presume that this feature you mention in "v-dub," is the same in all its variants. If I am understanding you right, the problem might have resulted from adding the files twice, since I went and appended each of the 17 chapters to the first. This is the first time I can recall having a video file having more than two chapters, so I didn't know the "v-dubs" could do that.

I have just tried joining the 18 files, using the append segment tool just once, instead of 17 times, as I originally did, because of jagabo's suggestion of my error.
That was the problem. I was doubling the files to be merged, and, apparently threw everything off. As I said in my original reply, not having acquired files that had more than two chapters/parts before, I didn't know that the "v-dubs" append segment tool worked that way. You can learn something new everyday, especially if you post to these forums.
    Thanks.
