Loading an AVI in VirtualDub 1.4.8 failed with message "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd'. VirtualDub requires Video for Windows compatible codec (dsvd)..." Windows MP reads the file with video codec "DV Video Decoder" (but WMP truncated the bottom 1/7 of the screen). TMPGenc 2.51 reads the file as AVI, Interlace, Field Order B, 4:3 525 line (NTSC, 704 x 480). Ulead MSP 6.0 reads the file, as well.
I'm using Windows XP. I may have deleted the required dll (dvsd, VFW) while removing DVSoft and DVCodec from my system.
Isn't VFW built into Windows XP? How can I get (or restore) the necessary codec?
Thanks for all assistance, Bob

Exactly the same problem with
both VirtualDub and Cinema Craft Encoder on XP.
Possibly this is because
Microsoft has decided to stop support of VfW drivers with Windows XP onwards
(see http://www.puremotion.com/videoediting/reference/technical/driversexplained/)
However, I found a vfwwdm32.dll in the Windows\System32 directory
and the corresponding registry entries.
I start realizing that I should have stayed with Windows ME or 2000
