I ripped a my copy of Tropic Thunder to my computer as an avi file. I want to edit some of the movie (language) and then re-burn it to a dvd. What programs can I use to edit the file without losing the quality. After editing the file, should I convert it to a different format to prevent image quality lose. I'm new to all this video file stuff.

Also, I'm on a new MacBook Pro.

You are going to need a decent NLE ( Non Linear Editor) Program,
as you will need to work with specific times / frame by frame
if you truly want to have a professional quality edit that doesn't
result in a bunch of herky jerky cuts that would mess up the narrative.

For that, iMovie 09, FCE or FCP will be your best bets,
as all three allow you to cut by the second/frame the few bits
of language you do not wish to hear.

All will require you to convert the ripped .VOB files to
DV Stream format to import into them for editing.
You can then export back out to iDVD to burn.

Now I have to ask the question.....After seeing the trailer in iTunes
(RED version), you pretty much KNOW the type of language used
in the film....Why buy it if adult language bothers you?
