My second hard drive on my laptop was heating up and going offline.
So I decided to backup again and buy a new one.
Now I have removed most of the data off it, it seems to be coming good.
Any ideas on why this would be happening?
Is the laptop maybe not designed to run over a certain ?GB
    cheers.

how fast the hard drive is spinning, how many platters it has, and how often it's being accessed would all be factors in determining the heat output of the drive...how well ventilated it is would determine how well the former issues can be handled.

Are you sure it's a heat problem? HDDs can run very hot and not have any problems. Usually in a laptop they have little or no ventilation. But if it's a big concern, you might consider a external HDD.

It was actually a connection problem
there was room for the HD to move back and cause a gap
thus overheating as the data had to jump so to speak across the gap
    anyways, seems fine now
    cheers
