    Taking a tip from

    https://forum.videohelp.com/topic333036.html

I am having a heck of time removing hiss and hum from a recently received DVD transfer. I've used Goldwave, Audacity, and Sound Forge but to no avail. Each time, I end up with an annoying tinging noise and muffled sound. I'm not looking for perfection just an improvement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  2. you most likely need to do that one over. it was recorded way too low, -20db. if the volume were increased the background noise would be much lower in comparison.

  3. Like the guy said in the thread you referred, use Nero Wave Editor. I forget which menu has the function you want, but it's the same one that has Noise Analysis. Run that first then run the noise reduction function. Tweek it until you get decent sounding audio, you have to leave a little noise otherwise the result will sound tinny. There's a button that lets you hear what you are removing, it's very handy. If you don't have Nero Wave Editor, you can get for around $5 at most computer shops (I don't mean CC, BBuy and the likes, I mean your small neighbourhood shop). It's part of the Nero Express or Burning ROM package that ships with DVD burners.

Just seen the post before me, he's right I always normalize before trying to clean a track.

  4. unfortunately normalizing will only proportionally increase the noise level also. the track needs to be re-recorded from the source at a normal db level first.

Sad to say, I don't have the original source tape but a DVD capture. After normalizing, hiss/hum is indeed increased. I've got Nero somewhere and will analyze in Nero Wave Editor next.

  6. Try Audacity (free) and its noise reduction filter.

    Audacity.
    Normalize to -6
Noise Removal - use the defaults
    Leveller - Moderate

I converted to MP3 to send.

Not the greatest audio source. This is admittedly heavily processed, but almost all of the noise is gone. It's a mix of Goldwave and SoundForge, custom filter presets for SF. At least a dozen or more steps.

Thanks for the help. LordSmurf are there any tutorials for Sound Forge and Goldwave audio restoration? What is the usual list of instructions? After normalization do you cut dehiss and then restore pitch?
