  1. I have tried burning several VCD's using Roxio's Easy Creator 5 - Platium Edition. All indications are that the VCD is created successfully. However, when I place it in my DVD player (JVC XV-S65GD), it brings up a MP3 Menu, showing the directory structure of the CD-R created, but I can't get the video clip to play. I have tried manuvering around the directory structure, but if I press the "enter" key on the DVD remote on any directory entries, the DVD appears to be locked up. This DVD player is advertised as supporting CD-R CD-RW and VCD.

the Menu structure displayed when I insert the disk looks like:

    MP3 Control
    Group: /
    CDDA/
    CDI/
    KARAKOE/
    MPEGAV/
    SEGMENT/
    VCD/

Each of these entries are directories on the CD, created by Roxio software.

I appears that the disk is being recognized by an MP3 disk, rather than VCD. Is there a way I can check if I am creating the disk properly?

Any help on this problem will be GREATLY appeciated. I bought the DVD player just today, in hopes that it would playback VCD's created this way.

    Thanks in Advance,

  2. Try downloading one of the S/VCD images on this site and burning it to see if it plays on your player.

If you really want to give your DVD player a good run on its VCD abilities, try the Demo VCD available here: http://www.vcdimager.org/pub/vcdimager/examples/demovcd/

Download the v0.3 one (the latest and to the best of my knowledge free from authoring bugs) and either the PAL (Europe, Asia, Oceania) or NTSC (North America, Japan) version. It is about a 40 Mb download.

If the downloaded images don't work, there is something wrong with your player.

More realistically, I feel that Easy CD Creator may be doing something funny. Do you get any error messages along the way?

    Regards.

I too am suspicious of Easy CD Creator 5. I'm new to VCD creation, but have made two successful VCDs using version 4.x of Easy CD Creator. They played fine in my DVD player (JVC XV 523). Recently I upgraded to Creator 5 and created a new VCD which wont play in my DVD. A comparison of files and directories between a working VCD and the new VCD show no significant differences. All my VCD projects have utilized TMPGEnc to create the mpeg1 files, and the steps I followed when using Creator, both version 4.x and 5, were the same. I don't have lots of time to figure this issue out; sometimes I review forums for hints or others with a similar problem, but other than that I've chalked it up to immature technology and am prepared to wait another 1-2 years for a consumer friendly solution. Until then I'll archive my video projects onto DV tape, or as mpeg1 files to CD-R.

Good Luck ... I'll be watching this thread.

  4. If you want to wait for a truly user friendly system (that makes compatible discs) flawless discs, you'll probably have to wait years...

As for VCD authoring being "immature technology", VCDs are old and the technology is hardly immature (more like geriatric! ). Since the last year or so, a number of very good VCD authoring proggies have been released (e.g., VideoPack 5, VCDImager with TSCV or VCD Easy, etc.). Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 just isn't one of them.

I strongly recommend people to try another authoring/burning proggy if Easy CD Creator doesn't work.

    Good luck.

I'll try one of the alternative authoring programs you've suggested. Thanks.

My reference to immature technology was directed at consumer level DVD players, those meant for connection to TVs, not computers. My goal is to convert my videos to VCD or DVD, whichever format allows me to play them just about anywhere. Maybe its an issue of setting standards and adhering to them, or maybe there's just not enough consumer demand, but DVD players as a lot just can't reliably handle VCDs, if they could we wouldn't need capability / compatibility lists just to figure out which player to buy. There's certainly no technological reason that keeps manufacturers from making such DVD players. So my other option is to wait for DVD burners and software to mature in hopes of achieving my goal. In the meantime I'll be trying to find a VCD solution that works within the confines of my house.

  6. Commercial set-top DVD recorders are out... though pricing is an issue as is compatibility.

  7. I have the same exact problem with a JVC DVD player not recognizing CD-R or CD-RW VCDs as a VCD but recognizing it as an MP3. MP3 CD-Rs work fine in my player.

    My Setup:
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum running on a Windows XP machine
JVC XV-FA90BK (Same as JVC XV-FA95GD but black)

Has anyone ever made a CD-R VCD play on this DVD player? If so what software did you use to author and what brand CD-R did you use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  9. I think I found the answer to my question. Roxio Easy CD Creator Platinum version 5.02x has a problem creating VCDs and needs to be updated to 5.1.

Check Out This Link from the Roxio Knowledge Base

Thanks vitualis for your suggestion. My interest in VCD is rejuvenated!
I used VCDEasy to create bin and cue files, then burned the VCD using XDuplicator (beta 4). The resulting VCD played perfectly on my JVC XV 523. I'll be upgrading my Easy CD Creator to version 5.1 as per the above post, but I wont be using it for VCD production. It's on to mastering VCD menus for me.
