  1. Can I benefit from using 2,3 or single pass VBR if I'm already using the maximum SVCD bitrate for CBR? I mean, if I make the max 2600kbps and minimum 0 and encode with 2-pass VBR will Tmpgenc or CCE SP actually allocate lower bitrates to static areas or parts of the image with less motion and improve the video quality of higher motion areas/objects?

  2. not sure about the question but just a bit of advice - don't set the min to 0 -- for some reason if you set it to 400 or 600 your SVCD will look better - in TMPGEnc that is - not sure for CCE

  3. I guess what's throwing me off is that I'd like to keep the average bitrate close to 2600kbps in general for image quality, but since that's also the maximum I can use I can't make that value the average of two multipass VBR values. Could I just say 2600kbps max., 600kbps min. and 2600kbps average? The average would then be pointless.

If you want your video to be 2600kbps, just use CBR. But if you choose VBR 2-Pass and set 2600kbps as the 'Average' and the 'Max', then you video will basically be the same filesize/quality as if you have chosen 2600kbps CBR. Be aware that you filesize will large if you choose 2600kbps as the bitrate, whether CBR or VBR.

if your dvd player can handle it set you max to 5000 and your average to 2600 and your min to 500. encode it wit a resolution of 352x480 and it will turn out very nice.

  6. That's the problem, whereas my player (Pioneer DV-434) can handle all DVD bitrates up to 10MB/s it has strict SVCD limitations. I tried making an SVCD at CBR 3000kbps and it was jerky and out of sync. The player guide here lists the maximum SVCD of the DV-434 at 2500kbps so 2600kbps is about the maximum I can use. But I dig the image quality I'm getting, just wouldn't work for a football game with all that motion.
