If DV files are dumped onto a new ext HD by a Mac system by a commercial editing house, can another professional commercial editing house that runs their stuff on PC equipment read and edit using those DV files originally dumped to the HD by the Mac equipment ?

  2. Depends on the DV files generated by the Mac. There are so-called raw DV .MOV files (which contain header rubbish that really ought not be there) and then there are true raw DV files (.DV or .DVSD I think). These can be used on a PC as long as the appropriate file reading module is installed. We supply one with our software. Without knowing what software the editing house has, it's hard to say if their software can read it directly.

Never really understood why DV nearly always has to be wrapped in useless AVI/Quicktime stuff. Popular formats such as MPEG don't use containers.

Thanks Johnny....I would imagine that most pro commercial houses work in the raw DV file mode and that is what I could expect them to download to the HD for me...correct? I would also imagine that most of these type houses have reading modules that let them get to the good DV files from any source...correct? What are the common PC reading modules that I should ask about at the 2nd editing house to insure they will be able to read the files and work in their editing system please ? Hopefully not hundreds to wonder about?

The 2nd pro commercial shop using PC stuff edits with AVID...does this tell you whether or not they should be able to read the DV files mentioned above?
