I was wondering if I install the mtp device driver, would I still need windows media player? The reason for this, is that I have a sansa view 8gb and I want to transfer music to it without having to use windows media player.

Some devices have an option for either MSC or MTP. Check that first. I thought XP included the MTP driver?

Hmmm, Yeah it does have the driver installed, but a pop up window does not appear when I connect it. The manual says I need to install wmp, I guess it works as a handler or something to that extent.
I was just wondering if it was possible to work this without having to install it.
See if you can switch the device from MTP to MSC(UMS). I have several MP3 players, only one Sansa, most, including the Sansa e240 I own, do allow this in their settings. If not, try using google to search for an MTP compatible application.Linux _is_ user-friendly. It is not ignorant-friendly and idiot-friendly.
yeah my sansa view does have this option. What I do is add the music to the music folder, but when I disconnect it, it starts to refresh and freezes... So the songs don't show up, but take up HD space on it.
#1 result from google, First FAQ at sansa.
01. Sansa player freezes on the “Refreshing Database” screen
STEP 1 – Reset the device
1. Slide the Power switch up and hold it for approximately 20 seconds.
2. Release the Power switch once the device is powered down.
3. Turn the device back on.
STEP 2 – Download and Install the Sansa Firmware Updater.
