  1. is there such a program where you can slow down a video like for instance when I play guitar I want to slow down a video so I can see where I go wrong etc

  2. If this is just for playback purposes, many software players support variable speed playback (e.g. kmplayer, smplayer you can increase/decrease speed in increments)

If you want to permanently change the original file, you would have to re-encode it.

You can also play it slower using VLC which is quite simple too. During playback click on the "-" left of the position slider to incrementally reduce speed.

If you want this to be permanent, this is an editing issue - several NLE's can do it. As well, you can play with the framerate with VirtualDub. But, yes, nevertheless, it would indeed need a re-encoding for any method.

Not necessarily. You can slow an AVI in VDub(Mod) and Direct Stream it at the same time. No reencoding.

Yup, for straight AVI -> AVI with no other changes (filters, codec, etc), Direct Stream is indeed available. Thanks for clearing that. I was assuming the source was something else.

Natty, I'm curious what the source is. You may only need to re-encode the audio to sync with the video (so the guitar sounds can match with the visual).

I'm thinking don't bother. For what you want to do you would need different parts of the video reducing speed at different times depending on which chord you want to master at a time. Just use a playback app like VLC (or others mentioned) and you'll be fine.
