I have a DVD that has ~15 subtitle tracks (according to dvdshrink, vlc etc). I want to imprint one of the tracks and convert the video to MP4 (x264) using Avidemux. First step is to create idx and sub with vobsub. When I open the vobsub dialog in avidemux for this I only see 5 of the subtitle tracks. The names of the tracks do not match the language that actually is in there and the track I want to imprint is not there. Is there any obvious reason why this could happen? I tried to remove all subtitles (with dvdshrink) except the one I want but then nothing is displayed in the dropdows with available tracks. Is there any other GUI to use vobsub to create external idx and sub files that I can utilize in Avidemux?

When I open the same DVD with autogk I see all the tracks and they have correct names. Don't autogk also use vobsub? How can the result differ?

Similiar behaviour appear on all DVD's, I used this example to keep it concrete.

I would use vsrip and just choose ONE subtitle track from the dvd.

vsrip looks to do it's job but I get fatal errors in avidemix when I try to use the idx/sub file. Is there another tool to imprint an idx/sub in a mp4 (x264) _without_ recoding?

You can't "imprint" subtitles on a video without re-encoding. Some containers do support inserting subs into the data stream without changing the video, and these subs can be displayed with appropriate players. I don't know if this is possible with the MP4 container.

Ok, I suspected as much. To bad. I'll try the whole thing with ripbot instead.

I have used Xvid4PSP to do similar. Japanese film (Redbeard) with English subs. Prepped with Shrink first - main movie only, single audio, single subs, then loaded into Xvid4PSP and encoded to mp4 with hard subs (using the PS3 preset). Great quality, no sync issues.
