    I completed a successful capture using Huffyuv in YUY2 format. Next I tried to convert the file from this raw format into DivX format using the instructions right here on the VCDhelp.com website:

    Launch Virtualdub
    Open the Videoclip that you want to convert
    Select under BOTH Video and Audio Full Processing.
    Select Video->Compression (see below)
    Select Audio->Compression (see below)
    And last hit File->Save AVI.

    When I do the Save AVI it gives me a warning about hacked codecs (I'm just using the ones with Virtualdub so I didn't cause it) and acts like it's starting to do the conversion and then all it does it hang on frame 0/1700 of video and up to 4096 of audio. If you don't know what I'm talking about I suppose I could take a video capture of it and post what the screen looks like.

    Is this a problem anyone has heard of before. Do I need to install new codecs?

    Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry if something like this has been posted before, but the search is shut off and I couldn't check.

    Well I found out that the problem is actually being caused by the use of the DivX Audio codec. I started using MP3 for audio and everything began to work fine.

    Very very strange...

  3. hi there.
    Ignore the warning about the hacked codecs - i think it is more of a legal 'safety net' than a genuine warning - so don't worry.

    Virtualdub has no codecs contained in it, it can only use what it find already installed on your computer. So it is YOU who installed huffuv and divx 3.11 etc....

    I don't think vdub handles audio compression too well, i would suggest compressing video without sound, strip audio from original source to a .wav file. Compress with your favourite mp3 ripping software to, not supprisingly, .mp3 format, then recombine (remux) the audio and sound in NANDUB. This is an augmented version of vdub which can handle (amonst other things) mp3 file input (whereas vdub cannot).

    More time consumming, but a) works b) better control over filesix=ze and quality.

    Now which compression codec should you use?????
