DVD conversion to MKV ...... getting lines in between

Hello all,

i am new to this conversion procedures.
i am using Xvid4PSP to convert my DVD collection to MKV.

I have uploaded the image which showcases my problem and the lines are seen at much places of the movie

the dvd i am converting is at 29.97 fps and it is showing progressive type.

what are the settings to rectify my problem.

IVTC it if it's film based (a movie), deinterlace it if video based, and if it's the common Indian field-blended garbage, unblend it. If you could post a small unprocessed sample from the source more definitive advice can be offered.

Although it may have been encoded as progressive (where'd you get that information?), it's interlaced.

I think he is probably talking about the Framerate/Interlace menu from the Video pulldown on XVID4PSP (I am at work, so don't know exact name of menu). This is a bit confusing to me as well. If I open up a NTSC video from DVD that I know to be progressive telecined, it will show it as Film, says it will process with TITVC, and (this is where I get fuzzier) I believe it says it will output as progressive. Under Framerate, it says 29.97 --> ChangeRate --> 23.976. I am saving my videos using the MPEG NTSC encoding settings so that I can burn in subtitles. Based on the settings in the menu I described above, I expected to get a progressive mpeg2 at 23.976 fps. However, one of the final things that XVID4PSP does during the conversion is run DGPulldown. So my mpgs are reported at 29.97 fps interlaced in Gspot. I am assuming this is because I am using the MPEG2 NTSC settings, but I am not sure.

At any rate, I think that is probably what is leading the OP to believe it is encoding as progressive.

If you encode as progressive 23.976fps and then apply pulldown, what you get is interlaced 29.97fps.

OK, when I use XviD4PSP I give my own scripts with which to encode. But if it's reading the DGIndex information which might show it as Film/Progressive, then what you say makes sense. Thanks, although it doesn't look as if maass will ever be back.

Yes, I understand that applying pulldown will give interlaced. I guess I was surprised that is what I got since I didn't explicitly tell XVID4PSP to apply pulldown. It turns out that this is precisely what I wanted since I am converting these videos to serve up to TivoHD and it will only accept 29.97 fps. Is pulldown inherent to the MPEG2 NTSC encoding settings? If I wanted to output a progressive 23.976 fps video, how would I do that? I looked at the avisynth script and didn't see a call-out for DGPulldown, but maybe I missed it.

Sorry for the basic questions, I am trying to really understand what I am doing with these conversions. I would really like to avoid any quality loss from incorrect settings on my part.

Also, how to you feed XVID4PSP your own scripts? It seems to incorrectly detect framerate/interlace at times and I need to remember to check it or I encode the video incorrectly. Almost all of my conversions are NTSC DVDs to hardsub'd mpeg2, so I think I can likely use 1 default script for all of them.

Is pulldown inherent to the MPEG2 NTSC encoding settings?

It probably is in XviD4PSP. It's perfectly OK to encode for progressive 23.976fps. However, if you're using some sort of NTSC DVD template or setting (as you seem to be), then it may apply pulldown automatically to make it compliant. I looked around in XviD4PSP and when set for MPEG NTSC I couldn't find a way to turn off pulldown. You might try MPEG2 PS instead. I don't use XviD4PSP for encoding MPEG-2 (CCE here), so I don't know what it does for sure. However, all my 23.976fps encodes in CCE come out as a progressive 23.976fps MPVs, and I apply pulldown myself.

If for some reason you want to keep it progressive 23.976fps and can't figure out how to disable pulldown in XviD4PSP, you might try HCEnc. Open the script and just not hit the "Make DVD Compliant" button.

Also, how to you feed XVID4PSP your own scripts?

I use it for making MP4 stuff. To edit the script, go (up at the top) AviSynth->Edit filtering script. Or just open the AviSynth script directly (File->Open File), if you're experienced in creating them.
